Sustainable Tracking of Assets
for Reuse
Towards a sustainable event industry!
In 2021, the European SUP directives were introduced to reduce plastic waste in the environment. In this context, Belgian event organisers, among which the football clubs, are obliged since June 15, 2023, to use reusable cups and they need to demonstrate that at least 90% of the material is collected for reuse.
The STAR concept developed by Aucxis for the lending and return of reusable cups has the potential to become a standard in the process of developing a sustainable event industry.
How STAR meets the European SUP directive
STAR facilitates the transition to reusable cups by offering a system which enables a smooth and efficient lending and return of cups.
By means of RFID technology, STAR tracks each cup, allowing for precise monitoring of how many cups are lent and returned, which helps in achieving the 90% reuse target. Moreover, the technology provides detailed insights into stock levels and user patterns, yielding valuable data to optimise the reuse process.
The green impact of STAR
Reducing plastic waste
By implementing reusable cups, the amount of disposable plastic is significantly reduced. Reusable cups have a longer lifespan and can be used multiple times before being recycled at the end of their life cycle.
Saving raw materials and energy
STAR ensures efficient cup collection after use. This enables quick cleaning and reuse, reducing the need for continuous production of new cups and saving raw materials and energy.
Lower carbon footprint
Despite the initial production costs, reusable cups have a lower carbon footprint over their entire life cycle compared to disposable cups. Reusing cups repeatedly significantly reduces the environmental impact and CO2 emissions.
Promotion of green behaviour
By using an advanced system like STAR, visitors of events are encouraged to be aware that their waste has an impact on the environment. The awareness that cups need to be returned and reused contributes to a behavioural change towards greater sustainability.
Sustainable management and monitoring
The ability to collect and analyse detailed data helps event organisers continually improve their processes and make more sustainable choices. These insights can also contribute to further waste reduction and optimisation of logistics processes related to reusable items.
